The Lakes

Working in conjunction with South West Lakes, I will be taking you to a selection of the following lakes:

Kennick

Near Bovey Tracey map ref : 812830

These beautiful waters situated on the edge of Dartmoor, are surrounded by forest and farmland and lie within the Dartmoor National Park. Rhododendron flowers make a blaze of colour around the reservoirs. Reputedly this spectacular lake's fifty acre waters with dam and surrounded by scenic woodlands was the first place in Europe to be stocked with rainbow trout.

Fishing from boat or bank. Fish for rainbows, brown trout and blues. Fishery records: Rainbow 10lb 14oz, brown 3lb.

Recommended flies: Hawthorn, Daddies, Hoppers, Black Gnat, Buzzers, PTN, GRHE, various goldheads, Appetisers, Ace of Spades, Monatana and Viva.

Fernworthy

Near Chagford map ref: LR191 665840

Set on one of the highest points on Dartmoor, picturesque Fernworthy offers wild natural brown trout fishing from the bank only. Some of the prettiest brown trout you will ever see.

This wild fishery will enchant you; wandering the banks and finding secluded inlets to cast a fly to very wary trout. To deceive these creatures will stretch your skills to the limit.

Recommended flies: Black Gnat, Buzzers. (Waders would be a good idea.)

Roadford

Near Okehampton map ref: LR190 425900

The largest inland water in the South West was completed in 1990; it has a surface area of more than 730 acres. The northern third of the lake has been designated a Special Protection Zone to allow wildlife a safe haven and to protect over-wintering birds. A 50-hectare forest, planted in 1999 is growing away from the waters edge. Right from its opening in 1993 the decision was taken to make Roadford a brown trout fishery only stocked with trout of just 10-12 in leaving them to grow on naturally to provide "wild trout" fishing.

The trout here are spectacular; they are beautifully marked and are truly wild. Roaming the banks you will have to search for fish which are very territorial - watch for the rise patterns very close to the bank, particularly amongst the trees that still protrude from the water around the banks of the inlets. Boat fishing is also available on this lake.

Burrator

Near Yelverton map ref: LR202 555685

The mixed woodland surrounding Burrator contrasts sharply with the open moor and the rugged Dartmoor tors, making this lake well worth visiting. This lake is my wife's favourite.

Stocked with rainbow and brown trout; there is bank fishing only at this lake and thigh waders only are allowed. This is very much a lake for wandering and enjoying the surrounding scenery as much as the challenging fishing.

At certain times of the year much of the food here is wind born and very small, so tiny dark flies are the order of the day.

Siblyback

Near Liskeard map ref: LR201 238 710

Located on the edge of Bodmin moor, Siblyback is a premier fishing lake regularly stocked with rainbow trout averaging 2lb - biggest rainbow being 10lb 8oz. This lake offers both bank and boat fishing.

It is quite possible to fish the entire perimeter of this lake in a day, which offers a variety of fishing situations; from a sandy beach-type shore to rocky outcrops and marsh land. Roam the banks taking note of the wind direction as often food will have been blown into the bays and inlets. If the wind has been in one direction for several days you will often find the trout shoaled up together.

This is very much a lake where naturals work well.

Eleven of these lakes are within a maximum of an hour and a quarter's drive, some less. They offer a variety of fishing from stocked rainbow at Kennick to wild brown trout high up on the moors at Fernworthy - truly a natural setting. And Roadford where fingerlings introduced over ten years ago have grown on to produce wild brown trout of 4lb plus.

For spectacular scenery and fishing experience, the lakes are hard to beat. Often you will not see another fisherman and will have the banks to roam at your will.

I hope that I can make this a memorable week - where we can make friends, exchange ideas - and have a great time.

Dartmouth living room
Extremely well equipped with dishwashers, microwaves, radios, colour TV's and VCR's/ DVD's, laundry, comfortable beds with duvets and bed linen, the cottages are ideal for those seeking a comfortable base from which to enjoy a day's fishing.

Four miles to historic Dartmouth, with the spectacular river Dart, the historic towns of Totnes, Kingsbridge and Salcombe all on your doorstep. Dartmoor National Park, one of England's last great wildernesses is a short drive away.

The Cottages

at Lower Tideford have been newly converted to a very high standard from traditional Devon stone barns, combining the original beams, roof trusses and stone walls with warm pine floors (in the Cornworthy and Salcombe), fully fitted carpets, comfortable furnishings, fully fitted kitchens and bathrooms and full oil central heating, all to assure you of a great holiday.

The Dartmouth (Sleeps 6+1)

The Dartmouth is ideal for a group. Large double bedroom with en-suite shower room. Large twin-bedded room. Bunk-bedded room. Bath/wc with power shower over and bidet. Large farmhouse-style dining kitchen. Living room with wood burner.

The Salcombe (Sleeps 4+2)

Upside down cottage. On the ground floor - large double bedroom with French doors to courtyard. Bunk-bedded room. Bathroom/wc with power shower over Large open plan living/dining room Comfortably furnished (sofa bed for +2) with original exposed trusses and pine floor. Farmhouse style kitchen area. French windows leading to your own balcony with original slate steps down to the courtyard.

The Cornworthy (Sleeps 4)

Reverse living accommodation. On the ground floor are two spacious bedrooms, one with two singles, one with a double bed. Bathroom with power shower over, WC, hand basin. Upstairs to open-plan living area, with original exposed trusses spectacularly spanning the roof area and warm pine floor. Fully-fitted farmhouse-style kitchen area.

The Dittisham (Sleeps 4)

Reverse living accommodation, entrance leading to first floor. Open-plan living room, comfortably furnished. Fully fitted farmhouse-style kitchen. Original roof trusses. Downstairs to the hall, large master bedroom with double bed and French doors to the courtyard. Second bedroom with twin beds. Bath with shower over, WC and hand basin. Outside, your own seating area with table and chairs to enjoy that glass of wine whilst watching the glorious sunset.

Directions to Lower Tideford Farm Cottages

From the A38 Exeter- Plymouth expressway take the left hand turning to Totnes, A384. After about 5 miles, on reaching the outskirts of the town, turn right at traffic lights onto A381 signed to Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. Continue up the hill, over the traffic lights, past the left turn for Totnes, and then take next left, half-way up the hill, signed Cornworthy, Dittisham and Bow Creek. Follow this road for approximately three miles, turn right down narrow lane to Bow Creek and Dittisham. Down the hill then winding your way along the delightful Devon lanes, across Bow Bridge, past the famous Waterman's Arms, along Bow Creek, through picturesque Tuckenhay, past the equally famous Maltster's Arms (which Keith Floyd used to own), over stream, bearing left, keeping on the road signposted Cornworthy. approximately 3/4 mile turn right signed Tideford and Dartmouth. Bear right at small grassy island, and Lower Tideford Farm is the first property on your left approached by its own long drive.
